Bearded Man Wearing Skull Cap
Artist:
Bo Hughes
Coin:
1936-S VG
|
First Examiner:
Fivaz
This appears to be a post hand injury (1957) work by Bo. A classic “C” punch created the ear. The subject is wearing a lined skullcap on the back of his head, and his hair is in the diagnostic Bo curly hairstyle. The altered profile (curved nose) is typical of Bo’s work. The coin was darkened post carving.
Second Examiner:
Farnsworth
This carving has the appearance of the works carved by Bo after his hand injury. The carving has a “busy” appearance. The subject has a prominent ear punched with a “C” punch. The profile is altered, but the field is not dressed.

Bearded Man Wearing Baseball Cap
Artist:
Bo Hughes
Coin:
1926-P G
|
First Examiner:
Fivaz
Very rough work by Bo with “1935” punched in at the left obverse rim. The subject is wearing a striped baseball (or jockey) hat. He has a very scraggly beard and hair. The profile is altered and the coin was darkened (fire) post carving.
Second Examiner:
Farnsworth
The coin was charred in a (camp?) fire after it was carved. Bo altered the profile and punched the hair, hat, bard, and “1935”. The collar and the baseball cap are nicely formed. The char increases the “romance” of the coin (campfire, maybe?), but takes away some eye appeal.

Woman Wearing Toboggan Hat
Artist:
Bo Hughes
Coin:
1937-P F
|
First Examiner:
Fivaz
This work has typical diagnostics of a Bo carving – hairstyle on woman, profile, mouth. It appears to be a “rush” job by Bo. Many scratches are in front of the figure and heavy (broad) chisel work was done on the neck. It appears to have an “apple-cheek” look to her.
Second Examiner:
Farnsworth
In spite of the many scratches in front of the face, I consider this a high-end below average carving by Bo after his 1957 hand injury. The carving has an altered profile and done mostly by punches and chisel.

Little Elmer
Artist:
Bill Jameson
Coin:
1916-P XF
|
DONATION to OHNS by Bill Jameson
First Examiner:
Farnsworth
This is a very nice, high eye appeal engraving of “Little Elmer”. Little Elmer has a lug nut for an earring and a flower on top of his hat. The artist signed and numbered it “Z-349” on the edge. The work has a changed profile and a dressed field with LIBERTY remaining. “LITTLE ELMER” was engraved behind the head.
Second Examiner:
Alpert
The artist created a very nice portrait of an Irishman wearing a helmet-like hat with a flower at top. There is crosshatching on the hat and coat. The subject has a nicely carved hair, ear, earring, and light beard. The profile is totally altered. The carving has a nice smooth field with “LITTLE ELMER” engraved at left. It has a nice eye appeal.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist:
Unknown
Coin:
1913 Type 2 XF
|
First Examiner:
Farnsworth
This is a nice example of an average original carving. It has nice eye appeal. The field is dressed with LIBERTY remaining. The artist carved the hat brim, the hatband, and the collar. He punched the hair and beard. The profile is slightly altered at the nose.
Second Examiner:
Alpert
The smallish derby has a strait thin brim and a segmented band. The work has a punched hair-beard-mustache, and an irregular ear. The subject has a simple collar and no coat. The nose profile is altered at the top and the field is chisel-dressed. It has a decent eye appeal due to the darker contrast of the hair and beard.

Kaiser Wilhelm
Artist:
Unknown
Coin:
Type 2-P AU
|
First Examiner:
Farnsworth
This is a very nice carving of Wilhelm. There is lots of ornamentation on the helmet, collar, and shoulder. Many fine delicate lines enhance this artwork. Wilhelm has a nicely formed ear and prominent jaw. The field is dressed with LIBERTY remaining. He also has punched ornamentation; whiskers created by scratches; punched hair and ear; and the rest of the work carved.
Second Examiner:
Alpert
It is a nice depiction of the Kaiser, who is wearing a very ornate helmet. Fine linear tools created many parallel lines shading. The profile is unaltered and the field is decently dressed. The contrast is low – the carving looks great up close, but is hard to discern from a distance.

Christ
Artist:
Ron Landis
Coin:
Type 2-P VG
|
First Examiner:
Farnsworth
This is a plate coin on page 8 of Romines’ second book. Ron signed it “RL ‘93’ 018” on the reverse. Thus, it is an early carving by Ron (#18) in 1993, one year after the formation of OHNS. The Indian was converted into a beautiful three-dimensional effect engraving of Christ at the time of his crucifixion. It has lots of eye appeal.
Second Examiner:
Alpert
It is a cameo-like carving of Christ wearing a crown of thorns. This is a bold, high relief carving by the first of the modern-day master carvers of hobo nickels. This specimen is illustrated on page 8 of Romines’ second book.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist:
Unknown
Coin:
1913-P Type 2 F
|
First Examiner:
Fivaz
This is a totally carved specimen with the profile slightly, ethnically altered. The hat has long accent lines and a short front brim with a long rear brim. The ear looks like a pugilist’s ear. The collar is very simply made, the nostril is slightly enlarged, and two small marks near the eye seem to indicate a small scar in that area.
Second Examiner:
Farnsworth
The hat has a large brim with the front part truncated due to lack of room on the coin. The subject has a stern look to him. The field is minimally dressed.
