Classic Two-Sided Carving
Average/Average(H)

Final Price: ___$231___ ...Hammer Price plus 10% Buyer's Fee.

Hatless, Beardless Man/Donkey
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1936-S VG

First Examiner: Fivaz
The most obvious feature is the high jaw cut away underneath. The profile and mouth are significantly altered. The subject has no hat or beard and his ear created by cutting away around it. The original Indian’s hair offers the appearance of a part. Rough (chisel) dressing is on the neck (no collar). A fat donkey is on the reverse. The field is chiseled-dressed over and under the bison.
Second Examiner: Farnsworth
Two-sided carvings are scarcer than one-sided carvings. The subject has a prominent jaw and ear. The field is completely dressed and profile significantly altered, especially at the mouth and jaw line. On the reverse, the artist chiseled the bison into a donkey.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: “Peanut Ear”
Coin: 1913 Type 1 XF

First Examiner: Fivaz
Although we do not know this prolific artist by his given name, we have nicknamed him “Peanut Ear” because of the shape of the ear on all of his carvings. Other confirming diagnostics are hat style (vertical lines on band; bow style), hairstyle (dark and curly), hair under brim of hat, “V” design of collar. This artist is very collectible.
Second Examiner: Farnsworth
I agree with Fivaz that the artist is “Peanut Ear”. The field is dressed with LIBERTY remaining. It has a nicely carved hatband and carefully formed ear – ala the artist’s trademark. The “V” collar seems somewhat incomplete. The artist seems to have both punched and "picked" the hair and beard. This carving has a nice eye appeal.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1917-S VF

First Examiner: Fivaz
The subject is very lightly bearded (and hair-moustache). He is wearing a hat with a plain crown and a band with a raised straight hat brim. The subject has an altered profile and his ear is back on his head and very boldly done. Two straight lines make up the collar. The field is completely dressed. The obverse of the coin has been lightly cleaned post carving.
Second Examiner: Farnsworth
This is an attractive, simple uncluttered carving. The field is completely dressed; the hat has a raised rim; and the profile slightly altered. The subject has a simple collar and light beard – hair. In my opinion, the light cleaning (not necessarily done by the artist) enhances the eye appeal of the carving.

Goateed Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1913-P Type 2 F

First Examiner: Fivaz
The most noticeable features on the carving are the dramatic jaw line and a scraggly goatee. The subject has a small ear and fine hair behind the ear. His hat has a low crown, a hatband, and a slightly curved brim. The alteration of the profile is minor. The field surrounding the subject is very nicely dressed.
Second Examiner: Farnsworth
This simple average carving has a nice eye appeal. The subject has a thin ear carved high on his head. The goatee is scratched in. His hair is finely carved behind the ear. His hat has a nicely defined small dome, a hatband, and brim. The field is nicely dressed. The subject has a simple collar and a well-defined jaw line.

Bearded Hatless Man
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1915-P VF

First Examiner: Fivaz
This work is of a very heavy (dark, finely punched) full head of hair and beard, also mustache and eyebrow. The profile remains unaltered, but a larger punch was used for eye. The field behind the figure and neck (chiseled?) dressed. Part of the Indian’s braid remains.
Second Examiner: Farnsworth
This work has a dressed field with LIBERTY remaining. The subject has a punched heavy beard, hair, and mustache. The Indian’s braid is still visible on the neck and shoulder. For a below average carving, it does have a good eye appeal.

Final Price: ___$198___ ...Hammer Price plus 10% Buyer's Fee.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1915-P VG

First Examiner: Fivaz
This is a nicely done carving with a low derby (with hatband and bow) on the subject. His hair, beard, and mustache are mostly punched. He has a large, ill-formed ear, an unaltered profile, and no collar. Portions of the Indian’s braid and LIBERTY remain.
Second Examiner: Farnsworth
The subject has a large depressed ear. His hat, hatband, and bow are nicely carved. He has punched hair and beard. His profile remains unaltered. The field is dressed with LIBERTY remaining. Remnants of the Indian’s pigtail also remain. The carving is attractive.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1913-P Type 1 VF

First Examiner: Fivaz
It appears that a fine knurling machine was used for the (dark) hat crown, hair, beard, goatee, and mustache. Altered eye and nose seems to indicate that it was broken at least twice (boxer?). Long hair covers the ear area all the way down to the neck. Two parallel lines make up the collar. A beading tool was used to create the goatee.
Second Examiner: Farnsworth
The field is dressed; LIBERTY remains. Three parallel lines were carved on the neck; two of them were for the collar. The excessive use of the knurling machine took away some eye appeal.
