Bearded Soldier
Artist: John Dorusa
Coin: 1937-P VG

First Examiner: Farnsworth
This is a modern carving of a bearded (goateed) soldier by John Dorusa on an average circulated nickel. His initials appear in the back of the soldier’s head. The profile remains unaltered. The subject has a large ear and long sideburns. The strap and the horizontal lines in the hat probably created with a drill. The field is not dressed; LIBERTY remains.
Second Examiner: Alpert
A quick carving by Dorusa, poorly dressed. The over wide helmet has horizontal lines and a simple chinstrap. The hair and beard punched (not using his typical arc punch). The subject has no collar.

Man Wearing Fedora with Feather
Artist: Steve Campbell
Coin: 1937-P F

First Examiner: Alpert
There are nice details everywhere. The profile is nicely altered as are the eye, lips, and jaw line. The small hat has a wrap-around brim with a feather on top. The subject has a nice ear, finely carved hair, and no beard. The field is nicely dressed and there is beading around the date. The bison’s tail is recarved. It is signed “SC 8” on the edge.
Second Examiner: Fivaz
The subject is wearing a hat with a wrap-around hat brim, a feather in the fedora hat at the back, and a small hole in the crown. It has a very professionally carved profile, eye, ear, hair, and neck. There is no collar on the coat. The subject has furrows in his brow, no beard, but a light moustache. There is a beaded arc over the date. It is signed “SC 8” on edge. This is overall, a handsome coin.

Bearded Man Wearing Fedora
Artist: Michael Branham
Coin: Type 2-P

First Examiner: Fivaz
This is a well-done representation of a sharp-nosed bearded man wearing a hat that Branham has dubbed “Old Time preacher Man”. The profile (nose, eye, and mouth) is altered. The subject has a large ear. The carving has an ornately carved rim surrounding the figure and a stippled field. The artist signed it on the lower obverse, and dated and numbered it (#103/2006) on the bison. The edge has a zigzag design.
Second Examiner: Alpert
This is a totally carved portrait, mostly with bold cuts, on the obverse. It has an altered profile and facial features. The field is recessed and stippled with LIBERTY removed. It is signed by the artist on the shoulder; numbered and dated on the bison. There is a continuous zigzag cut on the edge.

Cupid Painting Flowers
Artist: Michael Branham
Coin: Type 2-P AG

First Examiner: Fivaz
The figure of Cupid (with wings) painting a large flower is very nicely carved. The ropelike rim around the figure on a textured field is attractive. Cupid is seated or squatting while doing his work. The artist signed, numbered, and dated on the reverse: “B #104/2006”. It is a very nicely done modern piece of an interesting subject – very creative.
Second Examiner: Alpert
The subject depiction is unusual and creative. The carving has a stippled field with LIBERTY removed and an ornate border. The artist signed the reverse, numbered it #104, and dated it 2006. A continuous zigzag cut is on the edge.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Telephone Ear
Coin: 1913-P Type 1 F

First Examiner: Alpert
This hobo nickel is totally carved. It is a nice example of a typical carving by the unknown artist nicknamed “Telephone Ear”. All the characteristics of this artist (nicely curved hair, simple hat, bold ear, and wide thin collar) are depictured here. The profile is unaltered and the field behind and above the head is nicely dressed.
Second Examiner: Fivaz
This is a slightly better than average carving by the artist we have dubbed “Telephone Ear” because of the shape of the subject’s ear. The carving has a plain hat with no hatband, curly beard and hair, and an unaltered profile. The field behind and over the figure is dressed. Since been carved, the coin circulated.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: Type 2-P VF

First Examiner: Alpert
This is an old carved and punched hobo nickel. The simple hat has a long raised brim and no band. It has a simple ear, punched hair-beard-mustache, no collar, an unaltered profile, and a large “IBC” carved on the shoulder. Course sub-radial grooves line the entire field, which has LIBERTY removed. The work has decent eye appeal.
Second Examiner: Fivaz
The subject has a plain hat and an unaltered profile. The most noticeable feature on this carving are the “red” beard, hair, and moustache (all of which are punched). There is a large “IBC” carved in the date area. The field is radically dressed with heavy lines all around the figure. There is an arc of large circular punches in the reverse from the bison’s beard down to its rear legs.

Man with Sack on Back
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1913-P Type 1 VF

First Examiner: Alpert
This hobo nickel is totally carved. I have seen several near-identical carvings by this yet-to-be-nicknamed early carver. Nice work done on the head (hat, ear, eye, and beard), sack, long coat, and man’s feet. This carving has nice eye appeal.
Second Examiner: Fivaz
This is a popular reverse carving subject. The artist transformed the bison into a bearded man wearing a long coat with a pack or sack on his back. This is nicely a carved figure with hat and shoes. No remnant of the bison remains except for the profile of the man and the textured sack (the fur of the bison).
