FUN2007 Online Catalogue ~ OHNS Auction Annotations
Letter from the Auction Manager ~ OHNS Auction #15 Rules ~ List of Donations ~ From the Editor's Desk

Letter from the Auction Manager

Welcome to our 15th OHNS hobo nickel auction. As usual, we have a broad array of old and modern carvings. Highlighted are several very desirable classic early carvings from Bill Fivaz’s collection, including carvings by Bert and Bo. In addition, many nice to spectacular modern carvings round out the sale, along with some hobo postcards and Del Romines tokens.
The auction lots will be on display at FUN at the OHNS bourse table on Friday, January 5th and in the auction room just before the auction begins, during the break after our Saturday morning January 6th General Meeting which should end about 11 AM.. See below for indexes of the auction lots by artist and subject.
Be sure to submit your mail bids to me so that I receive them by Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007 at the latest. Mail them to me at P.O. Box 66331, Los Angeles, CA 90066. Alternatively, email them to me at quadra@pacbell.net. To fax your bid sheet to me, phone me first at 310-836-2482 so I can turn on my fax machine on that phone line. No phone bids will be accepted, but feel free to call me with any questions. Enlarged pictures (in color) of the lots should be visible on our web site www.hobonickels.org.
This auction is a bit smaller than usual; we need more consignments for next year, especially classic old hobo nickels of Average or better quality; lesser quality ones can be offered in groups. Now is the time to consider submitting a consignment for auction 16; the consignor’s fee is only 5% of the hammer price.
Remember, you will receive with each lot you win the original Quality Designation paperwork (or older Registration papers) with photo, except for paper item lots. Enjoy our auction, and I hope to see many of you at the FUN show.

From the Editor’s Desk

If you have never been to an OHNS auction, this will be a very good year to come. On Saturday, January 6th at approx. 11:15 am the OHNS auction will start. It features 85 lots including 36 classic carvings and 43 modern ones. Among the classics are two Bert carvings and five Bo carvings. In the afternoon, after our auction has been completed, Heritage will be auctioning the Hobo Nickel collections of Troy Wiseman and Norm Talbot. So…do not wait, make your reservations now!
We are renting an extra table so that we may display a fabulous Hobo Nickel exhibit created by the ANA. It was a big hit in the ANA Denver convention last August. So…What are you waiting for? Come on down!!!
On the front cover are pictured five of the leading lots. On the left of the banner is lot 2, a Bert that was graded Superior by both quality designators. It is a prison token (carving) done by Bert when he was supposedly a prisoner in Georgia serving on a chain gang in 1933. Come to think of it, it will be good if someone would research this.
On the right of the banner is a modern carving of a red fox created by Amy Armstrong. It is graded superior by both quality designators. This carving should appeal to anyone, especially naturalists. It is lot 61.

Lot 3 Lot 81 Lot 5
On the bottom of the front cover are two classic and one modern carving. You will not have to wait long to bid on the classic carving on the left. That one is according to Bill Fivaz, the oldest carving done by Bo. Carved on the shoulder is “GH”, Bo’s initials and “Kansas, 1928”. Carvings with location and date carved in are scarce. It is offered as lot 3.
The modern carving in the middle is Ulysses S. Grant by Steve Adams that was graded Superior by both Designators. This can be yours if you are the high bidder of lot 81.
The carving on the bottom right is one with a message: “Hungry, But Alive” It was signed “Walt Hart Iowa 1933”. Again, carvings with location and date carved on are scarce.
The prices realized will be posted within a few days on our website managed by Verne Walrafen, our webmaster: www.hobonickels.org.
Once again, thanks to my Wife, Barbara, and to Verne for his support. –SPORT-
