Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1913-P T-1 (VF)

First Examiner: Fivaz
This is a nice, average carving of the typical subject. The hair, beard, and mustache were done with a 揵eading tool, as was the single-punch eye. The nose has been ethnically altered, the ear nicely formed as is the collar, and the nostril was enlarged.
Second Examiner: Alpert
The bold hat has a slanted-groove brim and a strap band. The hair, beard, mustache, and eyeball were punched. The forehead, nose, and nostril were altered. The subject has a nice ear and a large, bold, overly-wide collar. This carving has a nice eye-appeal.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: ND (VF-XF)

First Examiner: Baker
This is a fully carved and punched carving. The field is a series of small punched dots which appear to have been done after the fields were smoothed, removing all signs of legends. The profile has been altered with a hooked nose. The hat is low against the head and has a wide brim. Eyebrow and facial character lines, hair and beard, collar and jacket texture have been added. This is a very nice example.
Second Examiner: Fivaz
This is a solid Above Average carved piece. The derby is much flatter (lower) than usually seen. The profile was altered with eyebrow, 搒quint lines and accent lines near nose. Interestingly, the plain derby overlaps the top of the ear. The field has been textured, which adds to the desirability of the coin.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: ND XF

First Examiner: Fivaz
This piece was mostly carved. Subject has just a hint of an ear below the hat brim; a heavy, short nose; and a scraggly beard. The hat has no hatband, but does have two 揵reather holes and a 搘rap-around hat brim. His collar and jacket lapel were well done. The area behind the head was textured with a 搘riggle-cut instrument. The field in front of the subject was dressed.
Second Examiner: Alpert
This is totally carved, except for the punched collar jewel. Subject has a small head. The derby has a thin wrap-around brim, no hatband, and two air holes. The profile was strongly altered with a big nose, recessed lips, and an altered eye. The subject is wearing a nice double collar. All the hair is in nearly vertical rows (the weakest feature of this carving).

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Unknown
Coin: 1934-P (F)

First Examiner: Fivaz
This is a nice, unusual classic carving with the most obvious features of the subject, the toothy grin. The mouth is outlined and a full set of 揷hoppers is displayed. The profile (forehead and nose) was altered. The flat derby has a zig zag hat band with no bow. The coin appears to have been circulated since being carved.
Second Examiner: Alpert
The dominant feature of this carving is the large grinning mouth with bold teeth and lips. The rest of the profile was also altered. The subject has a shallow hat, decent ear, unusual collar, and a nicely-dressed field. This piece has a nice eye-appeal.

Bearded Man Wearing Derby
Artist: “Peanut Ear”
Coin: 1913-P T-1 (XF-AU)

This carving was loaned and displayed at the ANA Museum 揚roud Spirits Exhibit, 2001 2002.

First Examiner: Fivaz
This is a classic carving by a prolific early carver we know as 揚eanut Ear because of the subject抯 ear. The hat, hatband, ear, beard, hair under hat brim and 揤 collar are all typical of the technique used by this artist. There is no moustache. It resembles the top left photo on pg 51 of the Guidebook, but it is a different coin.
Second Examiner: Alpert
This is a typical example of 揚eanut Ear抯 work. The hair and beard were punched. The ear is a bit more rounded than usual. The top of the hat dome has the tiny notch that appears on most of Peanut Ear抯 carvings.

Goateed Man Wearing Derby
Artist: Bill (Jameson) Zach
Coin: ND-D (VG)

50/50 Donation to OHNS and GMM

First Examiner: Fivaz
This coin has been 搕reated rough surfaces. The carving appears to be of an Amish man (no full beard or moustache, only a goatee). The subject has a plain hat and hat band, and an accented jaw line. Field was 搒tippled and the entire coin was accented (darkened) by artificial process. Artist (Bill Zach) signed (揨) and numbered (#1) on the reverse.
Second Examiner: Alpert
This is a nice cameo-like hobo nickel, with a truncated neck, stippled and darkened field, altered profile, derby hat, etc. The obverse has been artificially 揳ged to make it resemble an old (classic) hobo nickel.
