Subject: Archie Taylor - A Timeline
Below is a timeline of OHNS emails dealing with the illness and death of Archie.
I was originally going to publish it in Bo Tales, but I already had about three pages devoted to Archie. I did not want to get too carried away with Archie's death even though he was my friend. So for the sake of OHNS history, I am sharing this article with you. Perhaps Verne may consider putting it in our website.
The parts that are entitled "Letter to the Editor" will be published. ~ Sport
March 2 @ 8:22am: To OHNS Board... My father-in-law Archie Sr. had a massive stroke yesterday. Rollie is with him in Pensacola with his mother. I just received a phone call from Rollie this morning. Dad is in a coma, resting comfortably. They are waiting for the other two boys to arrive today from Maine around 2pm. I will keep you all as up to date as I possibly can. Please keep us in your prayers. ~ Cathy Taylor
March 2 @ 8:45am: To Cathy and Rollie... Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and Archie Sr. Hoboes are a tough breed, and Archie is one of the toughest...I know he'll get through this just fine. If there's anything we can do, please let us know, okay? Maybe some Mulligan Stew would do the trick? ~ Bill and Marilyn Fivaz
March 2 @ 9:45am: To Cathy and Rollie... It saddens us to learn that Archie had a stroke. Barbara and I are pulling for him to come through. ~ Don and Barbara Farnsworth
March 2 @ 12:31pm: Don, Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, and to all the other members. Would you please let rest of the members know that I and my son's family are on our way to Pensacola? The hospital is West Florida Hospital on Davis Hwy in Pensacola. The room number is 519, I'm not sure of the phone number right off the top of my head, but you can get it from the yellow pages of the internet. ~ Cathy, Rollie and Family
March 2 @ 6:39pm: Dear Don, Thanks for the heads-up. Archie has been important for the club and a very dear friend. I'll send him a card and lots of prayers for a complete recovery. Please keep us posted. ~ Ray and Jacquie Flanagan
March 2 @9:44pm: Elaine: Marilyn and I are so sorry to hear of Archie's passing this afternoon... Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Rollie and your family, and we can be comforted in the knowledge that he is now with our Lord and Savior, safe in His hands and in His care. We all now have a new angel to watch over us. As soon as arrangements have been made, would you please ask someone to e-mail us so that Marilyn and I can send flowers? I'll also pass that information on to OHNS. God Bless you. Much love, Bill & Marilyn
March 2 @ 10:37pm: Don, With deepest regrets, Archie Sr passed this afternoon about 2pm central time. Please let the rest of the board know this info. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Services of his Life will be on Sat. @ 3pm here in Gulf Shores. He took the last west bound train in peace. ~ Cathy, Rollie and family
March 2 @ 11:11pm: To OHNS Board... It greatly saddens me to pass this message on to you. OHNS and the Love Token Society have lost a valuable member and a very fine gentleman. I have paid several visits to Archie and his wife up in Cape Elizabeth, Maine (a suburb of Portland). I personally will miss him. My condolences to Elaine, his wife, and to Cathy and Rollie and to Rollie's two brothers who I have not met. ~ Sport
March 2 @ 11:43pm: Although Bo Tales has gone to the printer, if it hasn't "gone to the press" yet, I will temporarily halt the printing so that I may insert a notice of Archie's death. I will not know until I talk to the printer tomorrow morning. I will look around Ralph's pictures to see if I can find one with Archie in the background that I may crop and enlarge. Rollie or Cathy - if you are able - will you please scan a portrait of Archie and email it to me - Of course, the full obituary will appear in the June issue. In that issue we will be able to discuss/present a more detailed memorial in honor of Archie. ~ Sport
March 2 @ 11:47pm: To All... I have asked Archie's family to please let me know as soon as arrangements have been made so we can send flowers from OHNS. I'll take care of this so no one else need inquire. I'll also advise everyone as soon as I hear. ~ Bill
March 2 @ 11:56pm: Don: I hope this simple message will suffice for the bulletin announcement in this Bo Tales: OHNS has just learned that another of our dearest and most loyal members has passed. Archie Taylor, Sr. succumbed to a massive stroke on March 2, 2005. He dearly loved OHNS and his hobo nickels and was a mainstay at the OHNS table every year at FUN. To know Archie was to love him, too...ever smiling and gregarious, he was truly one of the "good guys". We shall miss him. Details will appear in the next issue of Bo Tales. ~ Bill [This message penned by Bill Fivaz appeared on Archie’s memorial page in the spring issue of Bo Tales.]
March 2 @ 11:56pm: Don Haley emailed to me (Sport) a picture of Archie at the OHNS table in Pittsburg last summer. That picture was printed in this past issue of Bo Tales.
March 2 @ 11:58pm: Don Haley emailed to me a second picture of Archie with John Yancho taken at FUN 2005. That picture was also printed on Archie’s memorial page in the spring issue of Bo Tales.
March 3 @ 5:47am: To OHNS Board... Thanks to the material Sport provided me I've added this: www.hobonickels.org/scraps05.htm#archie I didn't have enough specifics to add things like his birth date but I trust that what I did is adequate. If anyone wants something added or changed just give me a shout. Take care- Verne
March 3 @ 10:05am: To OHNS Board... I was able to get to the printer in time to insert the bad news about Archie. Since he had already started the work, we just substituted "In Memoriam" for the one-page article "What Would You Do If…?” We were not able to correct the Table of Contents which still refers to What do... as being on page 29. [I did manage to correct that later]. ~ Sport
March 3 @ 10:08am: To Bill Fivaz... Services are on Saturday 3 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Gulf Shores, 308 East 21st St Avenue,
Gulf Shores, Alabama ~ Elaine
March 3 @ 10:28am: Don: I just received this [see above] from Elaine. As you have the quick ability to broadcast messages to everyone, would you please forward this to all? Thanks, Bill
March 3 @ 11:49am: I (Sport) then forwarded the above message to the rest of the board.
March 3 @ 12:25pm: To Sport... Thank you for the info and thoughtfulness. ~ Rollie
March 3 @ 12:33pm: I emailed to the board a preview of the memorial page that was printed in the spring issue.
March 3 @ 12:36pm: To Verne Walrafen... Feel free to use my copy of Archie's death notice and pictures for the website. Feel free to improvise on them if you wish. ~ Sport
March 3 @ 3:06pm: To All... As I mentioned previously, Marilyn and I will take care of sending flowers to the funeral home in behalf of OHNS. ~ Bill
March 3 @ 3:30pm: Letter to the Editor... It was with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Archie Taylor, Sr. Archie was a mainstay at the OHNS tables at the annual FUN show. His energy, spirit, enthusiasm, dedication and love for Hobo Nickels rubbed off on everyone he came in contact with. He will be missed greatly by his many friends not only in the Hobo Nickel society but the numismatic hobby in general. Our sincere condolences and prayers to his family. We will never forget this sincere and loving collector. Sincerely, John and Nancy Wilson, Ocala, FL
March 9: To OHNS Board... There are not enough words to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers during the last week. The thought of someone attending an educational program with my father’s name on a scholarship is an outstanding remembrance of a man that wanted to learn his entire life. THANKS AGAIN ~ Rollie
May 3: Letter to Editor... Archie was an enthusiastic collector of coins and hobo nickels, and a pleasure to be with when hosting our booth at the FUN shows. ~ Steve Alpert
May 3: Letter to Editor... I remember Archie as a man of great integrity. I recall a year an a half ago he submitted some coins to ICG for grading after buying them from an older women. When some of the coins were returned to him at grades higher than he expected he paid the woman more money because he had under priced her coins when he bought them. That's an example we should all emulate. ~ James Taylor
May 3: Archie to me was what makes a club work, (Volunteers) he was always there to support the club and help us make the OHNS table what is today along with many other members. His personality was what made him the guy that he was. A lovable Teddy Bear. I myself will miss him very much. ~ Don Haley
